Europa reopens after roof collapse and wind storm

Europa plans to re-open for business at 4  p.m. Wednesday, one day after the restaurant was evacuated due to a roof collapse in another area of the building.

Near hurricane-force winds whipped through the Inland Northwest Tuesday afternoon, blowing off roofs, grounding flights, causing a record number of power failures and toppling hundreds of trees. Falling trees killed two Spokane women.

The roof at Glyph Language Services, 125 S. Wall St., collapsed shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday. Neighboring Europa closed as a result of the collapse. All made it out of the building without injuries.

“We are totally fine,” owner Aja Engels wrote in an email late Tuesday. “The roof collapse was in the same building and right next to us, but not technically over the restaurant … The fire department made us evacuate, and we aren’t allowed back until a structural engineer looks at the entire building.”

Restaurants, bars and breweries around the region closed Tuesday due to the windstorm. At least 158,000 Avista customers, including some eateries and watering holes, remain without electricity.
