Getting There

Friday Video: Blasting a road-blocking boulder

It's a conundrum when a 20-ton rock blocks the road. What's a transportation department to do?

Well, California's CalTrans decided to blow it up.

Good thinking! With a flair for a dry description, CalTrans said this about the operation:

Trained crews conduct a traffic closure, set explosives, detonate the rock, then remove the debris while getting motorists moving again.

Such passion! Of course, it's not the first time road workers blew something up. In 1970, the Oregon State Highway Division had the unenviable task of taking care of a 45-foot, eight-ton whale carcass. Good times ensued.
