The Vox Box

The View From UW: A Staggering Response to Obama

I have been sitting here for the past two hours completely staggered. People have been streaming past my window celebrating the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States. They are cheering, honking car horns, and changing "Yes We Can." I never thought a transformational event in politics would be celebrated like the victory in a big sporting event, but it has indeed come to pass. What a great feeling to be in the midst of this! From where I sit, Obama has energized young people, and indeed people from most demographics, more profoundly than any candidate for decades. Color me inspired.

In 2006, then-editor Steve Smith of The Spokesman-Review had the idea of starting a publication for an often forgotten audience: teenagers. The Vox Box was a continuation of the Vox, an all-student staffed newspaper published by The Spokesman-Review. High school student journalists who staffed the Vox made all content decisions as they learn about the trade of journalism. This blog's mission was to give students an opportunity to publish their voices. The Vox Box and the Vox wrapped up in June 2009, but you can follow former staffers' new blog at http://voxxiez.blogspot.com.
