The Vox Box

Looking good…

There are many days that I wake up and wish that I didn't have to pop in my contacts - for some that day has already come.

I was shocked to hear about a new medical procedure - implantable contact lenses. (But the FDA prefers them to be called "implantable collamer lenses," based on their collagen foundation.)

A tiny lens is inserted through the eye's natural lens, solving the problem of moderate to high myopia, (nearsightedness). Researchers are pleased with the positive results: After 3 years of having the lenses, WebMD reports that "nearly 59% [of wearers] had 20/20 vision (normal vision) or better, and nearly 95% had at least 20/40 vision (near-normal vision) or better."

These lil' wonder-lenses arn't available yet, but are expected to be approved by the FDA soon based on the positive research results.

Would YOU ever under-go the procedure? What's best: glasses, contacts, or surgery?

In 2006, then-editor Steve Smith of The Spokesman-Review had the idea of starting a publication for an often forgotten audience: teenagers. The Vox Box was a continuation of the Vox, an all-student staffed newspaper published by The Spokesman-Review. High school student journalists who staffed the Vox made all content decisions as they learn about the trade of journalism. This blog's mission was to give students an opportunity to publish their voices. The Vox Box and the Vox wrapped up in June 2009, but you can follow former staffers' new blog at http://voxxiez.blogspot.com.
