Volunteer training available in fall prevention program
Volunteer coaches are needed to lead sessions for a fall prevention program geared to seniors.
Aging & Long Term Care of Eastern Washington offers “A Matter of Balance,” a nationally recognized, evidence-based program to reduce the fear of falling and increase the activity levels of older adults.
The agency trains volunteers to deliver the sessions to groups of 10 to 12 participants.
A volunteer training day is scheduled 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Dec. 3, at ALTCEW, 1222 N. Post St. Volunteers need good communication and interpersonal skills, enthusiasm, dependability and a willingness to lead small groups of older adults.
Individuals who enter training also need to be willing to lead two “A Matter of Balance” classes within the next year.
Spokane County’s rate for falls is significantly greater than the state’s and results in more hospitalizations and emergency medical services, the agency says. ALTCEW has offered the fall prevention program for the past year and needs more volunteers to increase capacity.
