Pianist Donivan Johnson

Will perform and discuss early piano works by the French composer Erik Satie (1866–1925). Satie, known as the father of modern musical ambience and minimalism influenced such composers as Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, Cage and numerous others. Johnson will also perform selections from his own work inspired by the thought and music of Satie. One piece will be created and performed with audience participation during the concert. A visual presentation will include samples from Satie’s exquisite music calligraphy and paintings from his era. Selections by Satie include: Ogives (1886), Gymnopedie No. 1 (1888), Gnossienne No. 1 (1890), Prayer for the Salvation of My Soul (1895), Vexations (1893) and others.
