10th Annual Peace Festival
Presented by the Okanogan Peacemakers and Veterans for Peace. Begins at 2 p.m. with an opening circle, providing time for community comments, music and poetry. At 4 p.m., a Veterans For Peace panel, features local veterans who speak about the realities of war, and how a post-war world is possible. Dinner at 5 p.m.
This year the festival again features World Class humanitarian speakers. At 6 p.m., Dana Visalli will give a slide presentation showing his work in Afghanistan. The Methow Valley resident entitles his talk, “Big History, Afghanistan, and the End of War.” Dana capture’s his theme in the faces of the Afghan people, especially students, and the sparsely vegetated landscape of the Afghan countryside.
At 7 p.m., Spokane cardiologist, John Peterson, MD, will give a talk and PowerPoint about his work in Rwanda with Healing Hearts Northwest, a group of health care professionals from the Spokane/Coeur d’Alene region, partnering with the medical staff of King Faisal Hospital to deliver cardiovascular care. Their goal is an independent cardiovascular program staffed by Rwandans, and a program for the prevention and early detection and treatment of Rheumatic Heart Disease.
The speakers will be followed by music from two local songwriter Peace Festival favorites: Harvey Swanson and Sandy Vaughn. Americana Peace music by Ruby Rust will end the day’s events.
