STELZIG, Hallie Mae
(Age 89)

Passed away on July 23, 2008 after a brief illness, in Napa, California, at the age of 89.

Born November 5, 1918, in Pullman, Washington, to James and Kate Ethredge, Hallie was the youngest of three children. Her childhood experience was on a wheat farm in the Palouse country, but economic hardships of the Depression required the family to relocate to the city of Spokane. There she graduated from John R. Rogers High School in 1936 and worked as a florist's assistant.

After the tragic accidental death of her father, Hallie's mother took in lodgers to make ends meet. One of the young men, Richard "Dick" Stelzig, fell in love with the landlady's daughter and proposed. Hallie and Dick were married in 1940 and raised two daughters, Vicky and Cheryl.

After Dick's World War II service, the Stelzigs remained in Spokane until an overseas job opportunity with the US Civil Service arose in 1954. Selling their dream home and packing up household belongings, Hallie prepared her two young daughters for an adventurous move to Casablanca, Morocco. In 1957, they returned to the US and settled in Sacramento, California.

A few years later, Dick and Hallie moved to Santa Maria, California, where they resided for 40 years. The Stelzigs moved to Napa in 2003 to be closer to their family. A woman who had her priorities straight, Hallie was faithfully loving and supportive of her family and acquired many loyal friendships in her lifetime. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by two daughters, Vicky Vandewark and Cheryl Stelzig; son-in-law, Russell Vandewark; two grandchildren, Candace Vandewark and Stephen Vandewark and six great-grandchildren. Hallie was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; her brother, Lloyd; and her sister, Helen.

A Memorial Service will be held 3:00 p.m. Friday, August 22 at RICHARD PIERCE FUNERAL SERVICE, 1660 SILVERADO TRAIL in NAPA, CALIFORNIA. Words of support and condolences may be offered to the family on line at www.rpfsc.com.
