Tale of the tape: Kansas 78, WSU 41

FROM KANSAS CITY — Well, that was ugly. We have our capsulated recap of WSU's 78-41 loss to Kansas in the semifinals of the CBE Classic on Monday night.


PLAYER OF THE GAME — WSU probably didn't anticipate Travis Releford setting the pace for Kansas, but the guard shot 6-7 from the field and made a pair of 3-pointers to lead all scorers with 17 points. And he did that  in 23 minutes. Truth be told, Kansas was so good tonight that it's hard to really just single out one guy. Brock Motum had a tough time against KU center Jeff Withey, though he did score over the 7-foot center a couple of times when they were matched up 1-on-1. Motum finished with 14 points on 6-18 shooting.

PLAY OF THE GAME — Geez, I don't know. There was no turning point. There were no real flashy plays or acrobatic dunks. Just normal dunks. So we're just going to bypass this category, because Kansas did so much right from the absolute get-go that no big plays were needed.

KEY STAT — Kansas shot 64 percent from the field in the first half and 5-10 from 3-point range. That will win you a lot of games. Also of note: the Jayhawks' 50 points in the first half would have been enough to win.

QUOTABLE — "You couldn't tell what the plan was?" — WSU coach Ken Bone, joking with reporters after being asked what WSU's defensive plan was in the first half

UP NEXT — WSU has less than 24 hours to put this one out of its mind and move on to Tuesday's game against Texas A&M (4 p.m. PT), which lost, 70-49, to Saint Louis in Monday's other semifinal. The Cougars could be without sophomore guard DaVonte Lacy, who left the game with a left knee injury and didn't return. Bone said the severity of Lacy's injury was unknown immediately after the game.
