Tale of the tape: WSU 31, UW 28

FROM PULLMAN — It's a happier tale of the tape this time for WSU, as we break down the Cougars' 31-28 overtime win over Washington in the Apple Cup. Read on.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME — His numbers will get lost in the shuffle of the big win, the crazy ending, etc. But Dominique Williams really showed up today, catching eight passes for a career-high 143 yards. His 61-yard catch helped WSU to its first touchdown of the game, and he was a problem for the Huskies secondary all game.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE GAME — WSU's entire defensive line might be worthy of this honor, and Logan Mayes certainly stepped up admirably in Travis Long's absence. But the play made by Mayes and Toni Pole on UW's first snap of overtime — Mayes had the pressure on Price, Pole made the interception — stands out as the strongest. But we'll give the nod to Mayes, if only because of how well he played in place of Long.

PLAY OF THE GAME — Hard to choose, because there were so many that helped turn the game. Jeff Tuel's strike to Isiah Myers after eluding about three different pass-rushers. Travis Coons' missed field goal. Tuel's pass to Gino Simone on WSU's final possession of regulation. Pole's interception. Either of Andrew Furney's late field goals.

STAT OF THE GAME — Washington's 18 penalties — that tied a school record — played a big part in this one, as did WSU's eight first-downs via penalty. A very undisciplined game by the Huskies.

QUOTABLE — "That's like a wedding, first-child-born kind of feeling." — Logan Mayes
