Tuesday practice notes and quotes

From Pullman — The Cougar football team had a cold, wet practice at Martin Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. There were some highlights, such as a beautifully lofted throw from Austin Apodaca that fell into Dominique Williams' breadbasket and a stunning, one-handed catch by Kristoff Williams. There were also lowlights, such as Connor Halliday's interception during the team period. The defense looks eager to face Cal's Bear Raid offense, with cornerback Anthony Carpenter blowing up a pass and Kalafitoni Pole batting another down at the line of scrimmage. Read on for some thoughts from defensive coordinator Mike Breske, but before you do, remember to mark your calendars for tomorrow's 11 a.m. live chat on this very blog.

Defensive Coordinator Mike Breske:

[How was the tempo today?] Good. It was a physical game Saturday for us on defense, in terms of what they do. So we're still a little sore and that type of deal but we'll be faster tomorrow.

(Do you take the loss personally?) Well we've got to get better, and that type of deal. We gave up too many pass explosives and that's what hurt us. I mean it's 17-3 at halftime, we're still in it. We come out and we had the ball first, moved it down, and coach went for it on 4th down, didn't get it. But we went out there and got a three-and-out. We're still there with nine minutes to go in the third quarter. But the pass explosives, that's what we've got to work hard on and we're going to see a good freshman throwing quarterback this week.

[How similar are WSU and Cal's offenses?] Similar but not totally alike. The run game's a little bit different, there are some wrinkles in the pass game and that type of deal but there are a lot of similarities between the Air Raid and the Bear Raid. We went against the Air Raid all fall camp, we don't do so much of it now once we're into the season but the concepts and those types of things [are the same].

[Is Cal's youth on offense starting to show up?] They have put the ball on the turf, especially last week in Oregon in that rainstorm, both teams did. But we've got to take advantage of opportunities and get our offense on the field. That's something we strive for is takeaways. That's an emphasis we do, it's one of our main goals to get three a game and just keep working hard on it.
