An Eastern Washington University football player was dismissed from the team Friday after he allegedly drew a pistol during a confrontation with police. Chandler Gayton, 21, a reserve defensive back, is lucky to be alive, according to Cheney Police chief John Hensley.

If the Eastern Washington football coaches had one goal going into spring drills, it was to get more physical. Which sounds a bit trite – this is football, after all. But in trying to achieve a better balance between the run and pass, the Eagles did their best to emphasize the game in the box with more live-tackling drills, including the inside running game, head coach Beau Baldwin said.

All things considered, it’s been a pretty good month for Ronnie Hamlin. The Eastern Washington linebacker is three weeks removed from a broken hand, which healed just in time for Hamlin and the rest of his defensive cast to put a hurt on the offense at the Red-White Game on Saturday.

As a child, Matt Johnson’s Thanksgivings were all about family – and the Dallas Cowboys. Johnson’s football dreams came full circle Saturday morning when the Cowboys chose the strong safety out of Eastern Washington in the fourth round of the National Football League draft.

Quarterback Kyle Padron confirmed Wednesday night that he has been approved for a medical hardship that paves the way for him to play two years for Eastern Washington University. “It’s a big relief and a huge weight off my shoulder,” the former Southern Methodist quarterback said by telephone from Dallas. “Now I can’t wait to get ready for the season.”

When Eastern Washington needed something special on the football field in 2010, the Eagles often got it: Five times with the game usually in the balance, they picked up touchdowns on kickoff returns or blocked punts.
“Those plays were not there last year,” said EWU special teams coach Jeff Schmedding, who hopes that fundamentals and a deeper depth chart will lead to more happy returns this season.

The Eagles begin spring football practice Tuesday and conclude with the annual Red-White Spring Game on April 28. The Eagles will hold 15 practices and scrimmages with an eye toward “being really good at the bare-bones things, the fundamentals,” said head coach Beau Baldwin.

Eastern Washington University’s 1997 football team, which compiled a 12-2 record and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division I-AA football playoffs, will be inducted into the Eastern Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 6. The team, which included two All-Americans, quarterback Harry Leons and defensive tackle Chris Scott, will be honored at a breakfast and ceremony in conjunction with Eastern’s home football game that day against North Dakota.
