State Rep. Raul Labrador entered the GOP primary contest for a chance to challenge Idaho’s Democratic 1st District Congressman Walt Minnick on Monday, even as a fellow Republican lawmaker urged him to abandon his run. Sen. Mike Jorgenson, R-Hayden Lake, a backer of GOP rival Vaughn Ward, immediately criticized Labrador’s work as an immigration attorney and labeled him “pro-illegal immigrant.”

BOISE – Former seven-term Idaho congressman George Hansen has lost an appeal to the Idaho Supreme Court to get out of repaying hundreds of thousands of dollars to an Idaho couple he swindled in an investment scheme. “We were of course disappointed with the result,” said Hansen’s Boise attorney, John Runft.

Mike Simpson says he hasn’t endorsed a candidate in the Republican primary for Idaho’s 1st District congressional seat, though his name appears along with those of U.S. House GOP leaders on an invitation for a Dec. 8 fundraiser for candidate Vaughn Ward in Washington, D.C. Simpson spokeswoman Nikki Watts said, “Mr. Ward asked Congressman Simpson if he could use his name on the event invitation for the event in D.C., and my boss said yes, and he would do the same for any other Republican running in the 1st CD.”

BOISE – One Republican state lawmaker pulled out of Idaho’s contested 1st District congressional race Tuesday while another jumped in. The turmoil on the GOP side came as the incumbent, Democratic Congressman Walt Minnick, embarked on a busy schedule of meetings, speeches and public events around the district, including a talk to high school students and meetings with farmers, bankers, veterans and retirees.
