Otter proclaims day in Idaho veteran’s honor

Idaho Gov. Butch Otter has proclaimed Thursday will be “Vernon J. Baker Day,” in honor of the St. Maries resident who is the only living African-American Medal of Honor recipient from World War II.

Allred to challenge Otter

BOISE – A respected nonpartisan activist, former Harvard University professor and trained mediator stunned Idaho’s political establishment Thursday by filing to run against Republican Gov. Butch Otter as a Democrat. Keith Allred, founder of the citizen advocacy group The Common Interest, has been distinctly nonpartisan in his political agenda, which has included the successful drive to get the homeowner’s exemption from property taxes tied to the ups and downs of the real estate market.

Tough cuts ahead, Otter warns

BOISE – Gov. Butch Otter says it’s time to slash Idaho’s government back to what it was five years ago – because the state’s tax revenue has declined to the level of 2003-’04. As state lawmakers prepare for difficult budget decisions in January, Otter warned them Wednesday that he wants Idaho’s tax system kept stable, that he opposes a temporary tax on wealthier residents, and that he wants to protect education as much as possible.
