M 2011 Idaho General Election

Annastasia Somontes

A candidate for Council Seat 3, City of Coeur d'Alene in the 2011 Idaho General Election

City: Coeur d'Alene, Idaho

On this race: The City Council’s approval of the McEuen Field project “annoyed” Somontes, 44, enough that she jumped into the race. She said Coeur d’Alene is “thick with a lot of service industry jobs” and “it’s amazing how that segment doesn’t get much of a say.” She thinks the park remake is going to increase taxes on people who can least afford it, like her. She also is drawn to the public voice she would have as a council member, which would enable her to fight against other injustices against the poor. She acknowledges her race is really between the two best-known candidates: Dan Gookin and George Sayler. “During an election,” she said, “maybe the only thing people can hope for is to be heard.”
