Idaho takes comments on energy plan update

BOISE – As Idaho lawmakers work on the first major update to their groundbreaking 2007 state energy plan, draft recommendations would have them back off from pushing incentives for renewable energy development and drop energy efficiency and conservation from the “highest priority” to just a priority. Recommendations also call for lawmakers to increase the push for solar energy development and power from woody biomass in Idaho; find new ways to help low-income people afford power; and end Idaho’s distinction as the only Western state without a consumer advocate in its utility rate-setting process at the state Public Utilities Commission.

Redistricting alters game in some political circles

BOISE – Idaho legislators or candidates who don’t like their new districts have just two weeks to move if they want to run elsewhere. That’s just one of the many ripples sent across Idaho politics by the state’s new legislative redistricting plan, from ending the Senate career of a four-term North Idaho lawmaker to prompting a game of political musical chairs in districts from St. Maries to Idaho Falls.

Prosecutor releases details of N. Idaho grizzly killing

A grizzly shot by a Boundary County man had approached within 40 yards of his children, who were outside playing basketball, and when wounded, charged at the man, according to a statement by the Boundary County prosecutor’s office.

Not guilty plea entered in federal case of shot grizzly

A Boundary County man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to unlawfully killing a female grizzly bear in his yard. So many friends and family members showed up to support Jeremy M. Hill at his arraignment that the hearing was forced to move into a larger room at the U.S. Courthouse in Coeur d’Alene. Hill, 33, faces one charge of killing a grizzly – a federally protected species.

Idaho Senators offer new District 2

BOISE – Two North Idaho state senators have submitted a proposed redistricting plan for the Panhandle that would eliminate the odd shape of District 2 but also would lump two other senators into the same district and force new Rep. Vito Barbieri, R-Dalton Gardens, into a district with two Coeur d’Alene incumbents. “District 2 has been such a boondoggle for the last 10 years,” said Sen. Joyce Broadsword, R-Sagle. She noted that she has to drive through three other districts to get from one end to the other of her district, which stretches from southern Bonner County to take in all of Shoshone and Benewah counties and part of southern Kootenai County. “It’s not fair for the constituency – having someone who lives closer would be more beneficial for all,” she said.
