Teachers union backs Inslee for governor

SEATTLE – The state’s largest teachers union endorsed U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee for governor after Attorney General Rob McKenna backed out of plans to speak to the organization’s leadership on Saturday. Washington Education Association President Mary Lindquist said the union, which was expected to endorse the Democratic legislator, decided to formally recommend him to its members after hearing his concerns about state budget cuts and their impact on education.

Baumgartner to run for Cantwell’s Senate seat

After less than a year in the state Senate, Michael Baumgartner plans to run for the other Senate in the other Washington by entering the race against Democrat Maria Cantwell. Baumgartner, a Republican who won the most expensive legislative race in state history last year in Spokane’s 6th District, told a Seattle television station he will announce his campaign against Cantwell next week.

McKenna keeps state in health care lawsuit

OLYMPIA – Washington Attorney General Rob McKenna won’t withdraw from a multistate lawsuit against federal health care reform, even though the other states are asking the U.S. Supreme Court to do something McKenna says he doesn’t want: Throw out the entire law.

OLYMPIA – State Attorney General Rob McKenna did not overstep his legal authority when he joined a lawsuit last year against federal health care reforms pushed by President Barack Obama, the Washington Supreme Court ruled Thursday. But he did overstep that authority when he refused to handle an appeal of a property-rights case for Public Lands Commissioner Peter Goldmark, the court said in a separate decision.
