Dear Doctors: I’ve been having a lot of bloating and intestinal gas. A friend says this can mean that you have too much bacteria in your small intestines. How does that happen, and how do you fix it? Also, I’m not sure I understand the difference between the large and small intestines.
Richard Thomas is well aware of the common denominator between the beloved television series “The Waltons,” which launched the veteran actor’s career, and the treasured novel, film and play “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
Before there was Van Halen, there was Mammoth. The former, the surname of legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his brother, drummer Alex Van Halen, became the moniker of one of the most iconic bands in rock history. And now there is Mammoth WVH after the death of Eddie Van Halen, who passed away in 2020. The group, which released its debut album, Mammoth WVH, in 2021, is fronted by Eddie Van Halen's son, Wolfgang Van Halen.
When Bradley Cooper made yet another iteration of "A Star Is Born" in 2018, more than a few skeptics smelled a dilettante - a typical pretty-boy actor with clichéd, "ultimately I want to direct" aspirations. Cooper dispelled those reservations immediately in that movie, with an exciting, utterly authentic set piece at a rock concert, in which he not only believably played a burned-out star, but staged and sequenced the scene with urgency and grit.
Streaming this week on Netflix is one of the best documentaries of the year, “American Symphony,” directed by Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman. While Heineman is known for his war and combat documentaries “Cartel Land,” “City of Ghosts” and “Retrograde,” as well as “The First Wave,” about the COVID-19 pandemic, “American Symphony” is his second documentary portrait of a musician, following his film “The Boy from Medellin,” about the singer J Balvin.
The third season of “Slow Horses” is initially about files. That’s right, paperwork. Scintillating! That’s not sarcasm. I’m a sucker for paperwork stories. And it feels like the right choice for this sardonic, John Le Carre-flavored spy series set in the U.K. With its ragtag team of MI5′s least capable — who somehow save the day regardless.
When choosing between a box of Frosted Flakes and a knock-off brand, more consumers are willing to ditch Tony the Tiger and say: "They're gooood enough!"
The sign on the museum door says in Estonian, “There is nothing here,” a contemporary joke about a meandering set of rooms atop what had once been the country’s most modern hotel. These were offices of the KGB, the “Committee for State Security”: the Soviet agency that spied on foreigners and Soviet citizens with equal suspicion, distrust and disdain. The rooms are now a museum in the Viru Hotel, which still operates in the center of Tallinn, the nation’s charming and historic capital.
While all types of alcohol can cause headaches, especially in people who are prone to migraines, red wine appears to be particularly pernicious. But scientists still aren't sure why it is a catalyst.
The staff at Café Boku Coffee and Crepes have a saying: If you don’t like what you ordered, you can throw it back at them and they’ll make you something better.
Dear Annie: When I was a young adult out living on my own, I used to get subscriptions to Christian magazines from my very religious aunt every Christmas. I happen to be an atheist and did not appreciate the magazine, nor did I appreciate all the mailing lists that having a subscription to that magazine put me on.
Dear Doctors: We set up a carbon monoxide monitor in our new house, and it went off right away. It turns out the vent to the hot water heater was blocked. I’ve heard that even a little bit of carbon monoxide can make you sick. Why is it so dangerous?
LOS ANGELES – Like many a child, no doubt, Kevin Kidney fantasized about living at Disneyland. But he didn’t imagine himself swashbuckling with pirates or cavorting with ghosts. His special place was more serene.
Dear Annie: At 54, my mother, already blessed with two academically accomplished children in the 8th and 12th grades, yearns for a third child. I am nearly 18 years old and will soon leave for college. My father, 57, is adamant that he doesn’t want another baby. With retirement as a middle-school teacher within a decade’s grasp, the idea of raising another child weighs heavily on him, having managed students his whole life.
