Their goal was to transform the paper’s weekly entertainment section into something new and vibrant that would better capture Spokane’s evolving cultural energy. On May 14, 2004, the debut issue of appeared. A lot has changed over the years. Nightclubs have opened, closed, changed names and in some cases, cleaned up their restrooms before changing their names and closing again. Innovative chefs have helped local foodies realize there’s life beyond seared ahi. The High Holies have come and gone. And we at have been doing our best to help keep you in the loop. Unfortunately, recent staff cuts have made it more difficult to continue that mission. Among the many newsroom colleagues laid off from the S-R last month were several key members of our team. Rather than further dilute , we’ve opted to close up shop and consolidate our entertainment coverage into the main paper. The issue of you’re holding in your hands will be the last. Starting next week, the Thursday and Friday Today sections will focus on arts and entertainment news. Jennifer Zurlini’s On the Wall column and visual arts listings will run on Thursdays, along with our existing performing arts coverage. An expanded Friday section will feature a special weekly pullout highlighting upcoming events. Additional Friday space will be devoted to movie news and reviews. Occasional restaurant coverage will run in the Wednesday Food section. And columnist Jill Wagner will continue to write occasional stories on Spokane’s GLBT community. Spokane7.com will still exist as an events database, and you can still get event calendars and movie times on your phone or PDA at spokane7.com/mobile. Event listings will still be published in the main paper, too, so keep those calendar items coming. On behalf of everyone who’s contributed to , thank you for reading. – Ken Paulman, editor Fri, 21 Nov 2008 00:00:00 -0700 http://www.spokesman.com/photos/2008/nov/21/64190/ f79d1e5d4eca728b3473189cccf5b675 2008 The Spokesman-Review A Guantanamo detainee sleeps on a mattress on the floor of his cell, at the Camp 5 detention facility, at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on Wednesday.
