Down Montana’s Smith River

Boaters who beat the 7-to-1 odds for drawing a permit the float central Montana’s Smith River are treated to four or five days of scenic floating and camping in a highly regulated piece of heaven. And even though the water was still high and off-color when Outdoors editor Rich Landers made the trip in the third week of June, the trout fishing is good, too.
