Kapoeta and other regions of Eastern Equitoria State were badly devastated by more than twenty years of civil war in southern Sudan. During the war, Eastern Equitoria was a supply line for southern rebels and was therefore the scene of vicious fighting. Today, Eastern Equitoria remains acutely underdeveloped and rife with banditry, landmines, tribal clashes and general insecurity.
