Nelson Mandela
Nelson Mandela, who became one of the world’s most beloved statesmen and a colossus of the 20th century when he emerged from 27 years in prison to negotiate an end to white minority rule in South Africa, has died. He was 95.

The names Mandela and Tambo can be seen written across the window pane. Nelson Mandela and his African National Congress are expected to be propelled into power when the final ballot is counted in South Africa's historic all-race elections.

Mandela fled into exile overseas as the political situation in South Africa worsened, returning from exile eventually, only to be arrested and to be sentenced to life imprisonment in what became known as the Rivonia Trial. He served 27 years in prison before his release in 1992 after which he was elected president of South Africa. After his retirement as president in 1999, Mandela intended to spend more time with his family - the people he has often said paid the highest price for his political activism.
