Creepy Halloween associations about these animals can be misleading, wildlife officials say.

Owls' silent flight and nocturnal hunting contributed to European superstitions about them. Special feather adaptations allow owls to fly silently, so prey can't hear them approaching. Their eyes are huge in relation to the size of their bodies. On a person, owl-sized eyes would be as large as grapefruits.
