Gonzaga loses at Irvine

Gonzaga produced only two runs out of 11 hits in an 11-2 loss to UC Irvine on Sunday in Irvine, Calif.

Taylor Jones had a solo home run, Gonzaga’s first homer of the season, and Caleb Wood and Beau Bozett had two hits each for the Bulldogs (3-10). Payden Lamb extended his hitting streak to 10 games.

The Anteaters (10-4) scored three times against starter Brandon Bailey (0-3) in the third inning for a 4-1 lead.

Taylor Sparks drove in four runs and Connor Spencer three for UC Irvine.

• Logan Jackson had two doubles and two RBIs as CC Spokane defeated the University of Calgary 6-3 in seven innings for a split of a home doubleheader at Spokane Falls CC. The Dinos won the first game 10-8 with three runs in the ninth inning.

Jordan McGowan had three hits and two RBIs in the first game. Lucas Denney had two hits and Jackson drove in two runs. Reliever Ben Shoemaker pitched the ninth (0-1) and took the loss. CCS had an 8-3 lead after six innings but hurt themselves by giving up four unearned runs.

Starter Kyler Brooks (1-0) went four scoreless innings to get the win for the Sasquatch (2-2) in the second game with Zachary Haggett getting the final out and the save. A four-run second inning sent CCS on its way to the win.

• Whitworth went 2-1 against host Puget Sound in its first three Northwest Conference games of the season. The Pirates won 9-3 in the completion of a game suspended on Saturday. UPS came back to win the second game 9-4. The Pirates then won 2-1 in a game called after eight innings because of darkness. Whitworth is now 5-6, 2-1. UPS is 5-8, 3-3.

Golf

Whitworth’s Jesse Salzwedel, tied for ninth after the first round, used a 2-under 69 to take a two-stroke victory for medalist honors in leading the Pirates to a second-place finish at the UPS Invitational at Fircrest Country Club in Tacoma. Salzwedel finished at 4-over 146. Teammate Stephen Plopper shot a 74 and finished in a tie for ninth place at 9-over 151 over the par 71, 6,440-yard layout. Puget Sound finished five strokes in front of the Pirates.

Michal Schuster of Whitworth also took medalist honors in leading the women’s team to a second-place finish. Schuster came into the final round in second place, but her 76 gave her a two-round total of 12-over 158, good for a two-stroke victory. Nicole Lomax of Whitworth also shot a 76 to finish fifth at 19-over 165 with teammate Chelsea Bayley placing ninth after shooting an 83 to end at 25-over 171 over the par 73, 5,920 layout. Whitman won, finishing 15 strokes ahead of the Pirates.
