Medical Lake events offer free bone density test

Do you have osteoporosis? Are you at risk? Find out this weekend by getting a free bone-density test at the Stride for Strong Bones 5k fun run/walk or at the WunderWoman Triathlon, both in Medical Lake.

Some 54 million Americans have osteoporosis or low bone mass. Adults stop gaining bone mass at age 30; without exercise and proper diet, osteoporosis is a risk.

The physical symptoms of osteoporosis are undetectable. It can affect both men and women.

According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, the disease “is responsible for 2 million broken bones and $19 billion in related costs every year.”

Detection is the first step in fighting osteoporosis, and free scans this weekend are as simple as standing on a machine, shoeless.

If you go:

• Strides for Strong Bones 5k fun run/walk; Saturday at 9 a.m. (late registration 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.)

• WunderWoman Triathlon; Sunday at 7:30 a.m. (Late registration available today at REI, 1125 N. Monroe St. in Spokane, and Saturday at the Strides for Strong Bones event.)

• Both events will be held at Waterfront Park in Medical Lake

• Look forward to a free bone-density test, information about osteoporosis and the opportunity to ask questions of experts.
