Response to Tony Delgado regarding wolf management
I read with interest Tony Delgado’s (11/13/09) letter to the editor regarding Washington States’ proposed wolf management plan. Last year, Stevens County Commissioner Tony Delgado proposed that the state provide $1,000,000 to Stevens County, in order to compensate farmers, ranchers, and private property owners for wolf attacks and the killing of our livestock and pets.
This reminds me of the fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood and the big, bad wolf that swallowed her
and her grandmother whole, but thanks to a hunter, they survived that experience. The fairy tale emphasized the safety of the village and the dangers of the forest. The politics of fear has been a far more effective political tool than logic and reason and creating a terrifying and blood curdling wolf image in our area, does serve some special interests.
Little Red Riding Hood, our children and our pets, are quite safe here in Stevens County, with no wolves in residence, and not hiding under grandma’s bed. I applaud Tony’s efforts to please farmers and ranchers, but taxpayers don’t need another camoflauged earmark.
