There oughta be a law

What a joke! Our legislators need to be replaced with people who have common sense. Rather than protect us from those who chose to text or talk on their phone while driving, which studies have shown is more serious than drinking and driving, they have only proposed to make it a primary offense for those between 16 and 18. It is still a secondary offense for everyone else so violators cannot be stopped for that crime alone as everyone knows.
If behavior is serious enough to pass laws to prohibit it, shouldn’t police officers be mandated to stop anyone unwilling to follow the law? It is clear that the present law, which does not give the police the ability to stop the lawbreaker, has not worked. So much for voluntary compliance. It is a crime. Don’t the legislators care that a law they passed is not being followed?
Statistics have shown that too many accidents are being caused by this behavior. All of us have driven behind people wondering about their slow or erratic driving only to find they were on the phone. If legislators are not willing to make this a primary offense for everyone, they should resign.
