North Idaho: Fault Lake Hike

Distance: 13 miles round trip Difficulty: Difficult. Starting elevation is 3,200 ft and summit elevation is 5,980 ft for an approximate elevation gain of 2,780 ft. Family Friendly? Yes, for hardy youth 10 years and older with good hiking experience. Hike Description: This hike leads you to a gorgeous, trout-stocked, high alpine lake in the Selkirks. The trail begins on an old logging roadbed for the first 4 miles and then follows a single-track trail up a mostly gentle slope for another mile or so. Scars of the 1967 Sundance fire will be visible along the trail. The last 1.5 miles are much steeper, have the classic high-country feel with stunted trees and rugged rock, and afford spectacular views out over McCormick Creek and the ridges beyond. Fault Lake, our destination, is surrounded by steep, rocky cliffs, huge slabs and probably some lingering snowfields; it makes for a fabulous lunch spot. You’ll find it difficult to turn back down the trail when it’s time to go. See more at: http://www.idahoconservation.org/events/hikes/2014hikes/fault_lake_2014#sthash.NkcNZemM.dpuf
