Adventurer speaks on South Pole solo

The man who set the world speed record in December for solo-trekking 700 miles to the South Pole in 39 days will detail his Antarctic adventure in a free program at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Spokane Community College Lair-Student Center Auditorium.

Todd Carmichael of Philadelphia was known as Todd McLaughlin in 1982 when he graduated from Ferris High School, a member of the state-champion cross country team. The entrepreneur made a fortune in the coffee business, and is known not only for his adventures, but for environmental philanthropy and social activism

Even before recovering from frostbite and gaining 40 pounds he lost racing to the Pole, he started planning his next endurance test: trekking 550 miles across Africa’s Namib Desert later this year.
