Outstanding in their field

Andrew Graham, 15, a freshman at Cheney High School, traveled to Easton, Md., in November and stepped onto the elite stage of waterfowl communication. He honked away most of the competition in the 35th annual World Goose Calling Championships to finish second in Junior Division.

Alexander Martin, 24, of Kensington, Conn., completed a 4,300-mile cross-country canoe trip from Portland, Ore., to Portland, Maine, using only human power, mostly by paddling but also by towing the 30-pound Kevlar canoe overland 800 miles with a bike. The trip was made in three segments totaling six months.

Kim Thorburn of Spokane was named the Washington Fish and Wildlife Department’s volunteer of the year for her work to monitor reintroduced sage grouse in Lincoln County.

Elton Brown, 86, of Pomeroy was honored by WDFW for decades of volunteer service to hunter and shooting education. He’s been a member and mentor to youth shooters in the Pomeroy Gun Club for 50 years.
