Smoke rises from the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown after it was bombed by Japanese carrier Hiryu in the Battle of Midway during World War II, seen in this June 4, 1942, photo. Later, the carrier was sunk by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine after the crew had abandoned ship.
