Merry maintenance: Lyle Gaylord, who works for Royal West Amusements, prepares the carousel on Tuesday for today’s opening of the North Idaho Fair & Rodeo. Along with carnival rides, the fair offers animal exhibits, homemaking displays and competitions – including a texting contest. Gates open daily at 9 a.m., and buildings will be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. today through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The Kootenai County Fairgrounds are at 4056 N. Government Way in Coeur d’Alene.
