In this 1918 photograph provided by the National Museum of Heath and Medicine, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, influenza victims crowd into an emergency hospital at Camp Funston in Kansas. One theory says the lethal epidemic began in Haskell County, Kan., and crossed the state to Camp Funston troops training there for World War I battlefields. Infected soldiers then unwittingly spread it throughout the world.
