One of the divers, Marten Zetterstrom, says the S-class submarine was located near the Aland Islands between Sweden and Finland. Zetterstrom says all crew members died when the vessel exploded in 1940, probably after hitting a mine. Markus Lindholm, an Aland-based maritime archaeology expert who studied pictures of the wreck, says the claim appears to be true. He says only one submarine was known to have sunk in the area. Zetterstrom says divers found the wreck in February after a decade-long search but only announced it Tuesday because they wanted to confirm the identity of the submarine.
