Spark of curiosity: LillyAnn Lemoine, left, and Kaylie Knaub, sixth-graders at Riverside Middle School, conduct a science experiment where they introduce copper, sulfur and other substances into a Bunsen burner to create a reaction. Along with nearly 230 other Riverside fifth- and sixth-graders, they participated in the “I’m Going to College” event at Spokane Community College and Spokane Falls Community College on Wednesday. SCC chemistry instructor Jaye Hopkins directed the students to place the materials into the flame to “excite the atoms, and the reaction will create the Northern Lights.” Students also visited other areas, including the SCC bakery, the auto technology program and the SFCC physical therapy and photography programs.
