Closing ceremony: U.S. Army Maj. Miliza Russell, left, presents the last flag to fly over the Pfc. Joe E. Mann United States Army Reserve Center, to Irene Bennett, Mann’s sister, Wednesday at the center in Hillyard. Upon receiving the flag, Bennett told Russell, “I’m so proud of the Stars and Stripes.” A public ceremony marked the center’s closing and move to Fairchild Air Force Base. Mann grew up in Reardan and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor posthumously for sacrificing himself in World War II. After being wounded by four bullets in a previous battle, Mann found himself again under attack the next day while on guard duty on Sept. 19, 1944. He threw his body on an enemy grenade, saving four lives.
