Gas leak stopped: As a Spokane Fire Department firefighter stands ready with a hose, an Avista crew repairs a gas leak on Madison Street just behind the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes on Monday afternoon. The leak, reported shortly after 2 p.m., may have been caused by a backhoe operator working behind the cathedral. Sprague and Riverside avenues were briefly closed while crews searched for the source of the gas leak.
