Riverview Terrace, now called the Riverview Retirement Community, is located at 1801 E. Upriver Drive. It opened its doors in October 1959, anticipating by a decade the national trend of “continuing care communities” where older people “age in place.” The nonprofit facility is the oldest continuing care retirement community under the same ownership in the Spokane area and is affiliated with the Lutheran Church. In this photo, taken in November 1960, a 6-foot candle was placed on the grounds to celebrate the home’s first anniversary. Also pictured are, from left, J.P. Harris, of Sandpoint, a life tenant; George A. Rinker, administrator of the Lutheran home; and Ann Nordmark, of Spokane, the first person to purchase a lifetime tenancy.
