At Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge, a trumpeter swan stands up to inspect her newly hatched cygnet as it raises its head for the first time on June 21, 2012. The hatchling is noticeably smaller than the other two cygnets in the nest, which hatched a day or two earlier. The male swan was on the water swimming with the other two cygnets. All five young swans hatched within four days on the Pine Lakes nest near the refuge headquarters.
