Frequent flier: Ethan Breithaupt sets flag No. 596 into position at Fairmount Memorial Park on Tuesday in Spokane. Crews are placing nearly 2,300 American flags this week throughout the cemetery as part of their annual observance of Memorial Day. Says Breithaupt of himself and his crew mates: “We might fly more flags in one day than the average American does in a lifetime.” Every year, some 100 flags are replaced because they are tattered and worn. Donations for replacements are accepted at the Fairmount office.
