Bursting into laughter: Alexys Jolley, Sandra Lino and Chelsea Brown, of Warden, Washington, throw handfuls of colored cornstarch at each other at the end of the Color Run on Sunday in Spokane. The Color Run is a 5-kilometer race featuring billowing clouds of pastel-tinted cornstarch that fills the air and colors the clothing of race participants. At right, Luke Henriksen, a volunteer from Teen Challenge, is covered with pink cornstarch at the finish line of the Color Run in downtown Spokane. Henriksen and others from the nonprofit sprayed runners with colored cornstarch as they crossed the finish line. The Color Run’s website says the events have exploded in popularity since it was founded in 2011, with more than 170 events hosted in more than 30 countries last year.
