In the line of duty: August Grainger, 5, and his sister Autumn, 7, look down at the memorial plaque they helped unveil Tuesday, at the corner of Garland Avenue and Howard Street in Spokane. The two are the great-great-grandchildren of Thomas Sparrow, a Spokane firefighter who died at that location while fighting a house fire in 1939. Several descendants of Sparrow were on hand for the unveiling, the third in a series of 17 plaques laid to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty.
