An early 1800s engraving shows the ship Tonquin carrying John Jacob Astor’s seagoing party to establish the first American colony on the West Coast. The ship is crossing the Columbia Bar, which blocks the entrance to the river and remains one of the most hazardous stretches of water in the world.
