John Hancock, a former director of the Spokane Symphony, signed up for coverage under the Affordable Care Act not long before having chest pains that led to the discovery that he needed open-heart surgery. Several months later, he’s 98 percent recovered, he says, and the cost of the care didn’t bankrupt him.
