Tea worker Chitramani Mahali holds her son as her ailing father-in-law tries to come out from the house in Bundapani, 75 miles from Siliguri in the Indian northeastern estate of West Bengal, on Aug. 25. When the Bundapani tea estate closed last year, death arrived soon after. Seven workers died in the two months it took the government to become aware of the crisis, and the toll has continued to climb since.
