Hands-on learning experience: Lake City High School 11th-grader Julia McCaw holds an Oregon grape Thursday while working to plant a pollinator and native plant garden at the Bureau of Land Management’s Blackwell Island Recreation Area in Coeur d’Alene. With guidance from BLM botanist LeAnn Abell and the Coeur d’Alene Forest Nursery’s Jasmine Williams, students in Lake City High School’s Advanced Placement Environmental Science course participated in the planting event. Volunteers from Kootenai County Master Gardeners, the Idaho Native Plant Society, The Lands Council and the University of Idaho’s Confluence Project also worked with the students. The BLM Coeur d’Alene Field Office began development of the interpretive, native plant garden along the southwest end of the Blackwell Island Recreation Area late last summer. All shrubs and plants established in the garden will be representative of Inland Northwest species.
