In this Nov. 9, 2015 photo provided by the Wildlife Conservation Society, Mark Baumgartner of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution stands next to a whale bouy, left, a high-tech acoustic device that will eavesdrop on the songs of the whales, in Woods Hole, Mass. Scientists have deployed the buoy 22 miles off the coast of New York’s Fire Island to monitor several species of great whales in “near real-time.” With the information, scientists at Woods Hole teamed with the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Ocean Giants Program in New York hope to better understand and safeguard the whales’ movements near two busy shipping lanes entering New York Harbor.
