The Indian government banned a Maoist rebel group Monday, nearly two months after the group moved into the Lalgarh region, a heavily forested part of West Bengal state. It drove out poorly armed local police and seized control of villages in a 20 square mile (52 square kilometer) area. Villagers had fled their homes after authorities sent hundreds of soldiers to try and reclaim the large area captured by the rebels.
