Model T Club tour

Ten or so Model T Fords left Spokane and make a big loop through Elk, Washington, Spirit Lake and Bayview, Idaho before returning to Spokane. The weather was cool and sometimes rainy, testing the mettle of those with open cars. The Inland Empire chapter of the Model T Ford Owners of America stopped for lunch in Spirit Lake and ate a variety of foods cooked in metal containers riding on the exhaust manifolds of the engines.

Clark Fork Delta restoration project

The $6 million Clark Fork Delta restoration project, near Clark Fork, Id., started last fall, It targeted 680 threatened acres of the delta. Heavy equipment was used to rebuild shorelines and raise the height of partially submerged areas. The intent is to preserve what remains of the delta and start to recover some ground. Katherine Cousins, Idaho Department of Fish and Game biologist, and her team planted 90,000 plants. When it didn’t rain in May, she worried they would die, but the lake come up in time.

Elson Floyd Memorial

At a ceremony Wednesday afternoon at WSU’s Beasley Coliseum, thousands gathered to celebrate the university’s 10th president, Elson Floyd, who died of colon cancer June 20 at the age of 59.

Firestorm 1991

Twenty-four years ago wind-whipped wildfires took off and began to ravage several Eastern Washington counties.
It took several days and multiple agencies to get nearly 100 fires contained in October 1991.
By the end of what became known as “firestorm,” one person was dead and more than 100 homes had been burned to the ground.

Wildfires in Twisp

A fire near Twisp, Washington blew up Wednesday, overtaking and killing three firefighters and injuring several others. The scenic mountain town, along with nearby Winthrop, were under evacuation orders as wind whipped the flames from a few dozen acres to thousands of acres with hundreds of homes threatened.

Spokane Central Service Center

City officials and contractors cut the ribbon on the city of Spokane’s Central Service Center Tuesday, August 18, 2015. The new $16.5 million shop and office complex will centralize maintenance for city vehicles, including a new fleet of garbage trucks which run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

Stevens County Complex fire

The Stevens County Complex fire has stretched state and local fire forces thin overnight, driving some homeowners to battle the flames themselves. Stevens County Fire Chief Les Schneiter said eight homes have burned. Multiple fire districts responded to the Addy area fire, he said. However, the Department of Natural Resources crews were scarce because of fire activity across the Inland Northwest.

Syfy Channel’s “Z Nation” zombie apocalypse show films at Northern Quest Resort and Casino Aug. 5 and 6. In episode being filmed, the ragtag group of zombie survivors come across an Indian casino which is still operating in spite of the apocalypse.

Korean War veteran returns home

Korean War veteran, U.S. Army Cpl. Donald Therkelsen’s remains arrive in Spokane from Hawaii, Aug. 6, 2015, at Spokane International Airport for a dignified transfer by the Army National Guard Honor Guard. Cpl. Therkelsen, an Army medic, was listed as missing in action in July 1953 in North Korea. His remains were discovered in a mass grave with over 200 bodies.

2015 All-Star Game

Fanfest drew many people before the 2015 All-Star Game, Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2015 at Avista Stadium. Spokane is the host for the 2015 All-Star Game. The game is the first interleague all-star game between the Pioneer League and the Northwest League.
