Pledge to protect elephants

Representatives of eight countries with large wild elephant populations pledged Tuesday to eradicate poaching of the animals and smuggling of ivory to ensure their survival for future generations. Environment ministers or officials from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, India, Botswana, Congo, Kenya and Tanzania attended the meeting in New Delhi.

Grimsvotn volcano erupts

The Grimsvotn volcano, which lies under the uninhabited Vatnajokull glacier about 120 miles (200 kilometers) east of the capital, Reykjavik, Iceland began erupting Saturday for the first time since 2004.

Peregrine falcon banding

Officers from the Pennsylvania Game Commission gathered the falcon chicks to give them a check up and apply bands to their legs, and then return them to the nest in Pittsburgh. The peregrine falcon is listed on Pennsylvania endangered species, and the program monitoring the birds nesting has been in effect since since 2002.

Mississippi flooding

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said there are more than 4,800 people displaced in Mississippi due to flooding, with more than 2,000 of them in Vicksburg and surrounding areas in Warren County. MEMA Spokesman Jeff Rent said more than 6,000 people in Mississippi could be displaced before the flood is over.
